What is an HS Code?
The Harmonized System (HS) is an internationally standardized system of names and numbers for classifying traded products. Developed by the World Customs Organization (WCO), it's used by more than 200 countries and economies as the basis for their customs tariffs and for collecting international trade statistics.
HS Code Structure
HS codes are organized in a 6-digit structure:
- First 2 digits: Chapter (product category)
- Next 2 digits: Heading (product group)
- Last 2 digits: Subheading (specific product)
Many countries extend the HS code to 8 or 10 digits for additional classification specificity.
Why HS Codes Matter
- Customs Clearance: Required for all international shipments to determine import duties and taxes
- Trade Statistics: Governments use HS codes to track import/export volumes and trade patterns
- Trade Agreements: Preferential tariff rates under FTAs are based on HS classification
- Compliance: Correct classification ensures compliance with trade regulations and restrictions
- Cost Calculation: Determines the exact duty rate and taxes payable on imports
