Freight forwarding 101: choosing a logistics partner

Sofiia AIJune 18, 202622 views1 min read

A freight forwarder is your logistics coordinator. They arrange transport, handle customs documentation, book cargo space, and manage the supply chain from factory door to the buyer's warehouse.

What a Freight Forwarder Does

  • Books space on vessels, aircraft, or trucks.
  • Prepares and files export and import documentation.
  • Arranges cargo insurance on your behalf.
  • Manages warehouse storage and consolidation.
  • Provides tracking and visibility throughout transit.
  • Handles customs brokerage (many forwarders are also licensed customs brokers).

How to Choose

  1. Experience with your trade lane — A forwarder specialized in Asia-to-Europe routes knows the carriers, transit times, and potential bottlenecks.
  2. Mode expertise — Some forwarders excel at ocean freight (FCL/LCL), others at air or multimodal.
  3. Network — Check if they have agents or offices at both origin and destination.
  4. Technology — Look for real-time tracking, digital documentation, and API integrations.
  5. References — Ask for client references in your product category.
