Choosing the right container type is essential for protecting your goods during ocean transit and optimizing shipping costs.
Standard Container Types
- 20-foot dry (20'GP) — Internal volume approximately 33 CBM, max payload about 28 tons. The standard unit for measuring shipping (1 TEU = one 20-foot equivalent unit).
- 40-foot dry (40'GP) — Internal volume approximately 67 CBM, max payload about 26 tons. Most popular for volume-heavy but lightweight goods.
- 40-foot high cube (40'HC) — Extra 30 cm of height compared to standard 40'GP. Ideal for tall or voluminous cargo.
- Reefer container — Temperature-controlled (typically -25°C to +25°C). Used for perishable goods: food, flowers, pharmaceuticals.
- Open-top container — Removable roof for cargo that cannot be loaded through standard doors (heavy machinery, tall equipment).
- Flat rack container — Collapsible sides for oversized or heavy cargo like vehicles, boats, or construction equipment.
Choosing the Right Container
Calculate your total CBM and gross weight. If either exceeds the limits of one container, you need multiple units or a different type. Remember that weight limits are often reached before volume limits for dense goods like stone or metal.
Faktorist's freight quote request form automatically suggests container type and quantity based on the shipment details you enter.
